If all goes according to plan, the first Google Fiber internet customer in West Jordan will connect early 2023.

Residents will be able to sign up as lines are installed; construction is due to begin the second half of 2022. Residents will pay for the access.

“Google fiber will pay a license fee of 2% of revenues to the city of West Jordan for the use of the rights of way [roads],” Chief Administrative Officer Korban Lee said. “This is an agreement for 15 years, assuming everything goes well. “

The desire for Google Fiber is not new.

“We have actually been investigating this for over a decade,” Councilmember Chris McConnehey said.

The city is not responsible for any of the construction costs. Every time Google wants to dig into a street, it must get a permit from the city.

“They will always have to let us know—any time you are cutting into a road that goes to the engineering department,” Communications Director Tauni Barker said.
