Legendary golfer Ben Hogan once said: “The most important shot in golf is the next one.”

That may be the approach Hillcrest golf coach Dave Richardson is taking.

“My kids shot their best and had a lot of improvement,” he said. “They’re getting better all the time.”

Richardson is celebrating the players’ improvements as the team plays against tough schools, including state champions Skyline High, and placed last in region and didn’t win a single tournament. Other region schools Olympus and Brighton also placed in the top eight at state.

“We got some points, but we didn’t win a dual,” he said. “Golf, like tennis, is a country club sport and we’re in a region with other schools above our socio-economic level, so we’re considered the poor westside school. In our old region, we could compete and were considered the eastside school.”

He applauded this season’s consistent play from junior Braden Rosenhan, sophomore Jeb Thomas and freshman Matthew Miller, and hopes that they will lead the team next fall to more success.

“We can compete in any region—except the one we’re in,” he said.
