West Lake STEM Jr. High haunted house scares up funds for school's PTSA

Some students would say junior high school is a scary place, but on Halloween that took on a different meaning at one West Valley City school.
The West Lake STEM Jr. High School Parent Teacher Student Association sponsored the school’s first-ever haunted house.
The attraction was a fundraiser, said association president Ann Peterson. “We’ve been able to involve a couple hundred students in doing it and it’s been a lot of fun,” she said of the kids who helped plan, set up, and serve as “actors” in the haunted house.
“The community support for it has been amazing,” Peterson said. Admission was $5 and free hot chocolate was available to those who braved a chilly evening to make the trek through the haunted house which traversed partly inside the school and partly through an enclosed section set up outside along the west side of the building.
Perhaps in typical junior high fashion, some male students found the fright factor of the haunted house limited. When asked if it was scary, eighth-grade student Gael Maruri replied, “Not really, no.”
It was the same response from fellow eighth-grade student Kayden Morrey, except for one thing: “The chainsaws,” he said.
