Armed robbery arrest by Police Officer Andrew Jensen garners award

Each month there are police officers all over the country who deal with job situations that can quickly escalate into danger for themselves as well as the public. When these situations are addressed and resolved without incident, too few go without recognition. One such officer received such praise at one of Millcreek’s city council meetings. Officer Andrew Jensen was honored by Chief Steve Debry, the council, and all in attendance when he received the Officer of the Month award for October. 

This is the second time he has been issued Officer of the Month in a 12-month period. Just shy of a year ago, Jensen was performing some proactive policing throughout the Millcreek area. The work eventually led to a traffic stop where Jensen identified an individual with multiple warrants for their arrest. Jensen performed the arrest and did an extensive search, finding and seizing additional narcotics. By handling the confinement and execution of the warrant with respect and kindness, Jensen built some rapport. This allowed him to gain further information on separate cases.

For Jensen’s second award, Debry explained that on Sept. 12, Jensen was called in by dispatch to a reported robbery that had just occurred at the Iceberg fast food diner located on 3900 South and 900 East. An employee working that evening at the Iceberg reported to stepping outside and being robbed at gunpoint just outside the business. The suspects pointed a gun at the victim and proceeded to commit the robbery. The suspects took the victim’s valuables as well as his cell phone in an attempt to gain some time to flee. The suspects then fled on foot. Millcreek officers set up a perimeter to begin the containment of the suspects until they were apprehended. Jensen was familiar with the area and had an idea of where the suspects might flee. 

Jensen responded to the area of 4000 South and 700 East and started looking for the suspects. He found two subjects that matched the description given. He took one of them into custody, the other fled. Jensen recovered the weapon used as well as the shirt the suspect was wearing. The weapon was a pellet gun. He located the victim’s cell phone on the suspect he had in custody. He was also able to recover drugs, with the help of a K-9 unit, that were believed to have been abandoned by the second suspect. Jensen also located the second suspect’s identification in the bag with the gun. He ran with one of the K-9 officers to help look for the second suspect since he had observed him and knew what he looked like.
