On Thursday, May 17, Fairbourne Station will host this year’s Student Arts Festival sponsored by the city of West Valley.

“The Student Arts Festival is free to anyone who wants to participate and is a middle school or high school student within West Valley City,” said Nick Coleman of Parks and Recreation who is in charge of the event this year.

Students can submit any 2D or 3D artwork May 11 to have it shown in the park at Fairbourne by the gazebo that Thursday between 5 to 6.30 p.m. Tents and designated areas will allow for the art to be hung if necessary. In the past, Coleman said, they’ve take large canvases, sculpture and pottery along with smaller paintings and drawings.

“The artwork can be from any time, not necessarily just that they're working on now,” said Coleman, “Whatever they want to bring out, they’re more than welcome to.”

In 2017, the event had between 16 submissions from students bringing multiple pieces each. This year, Coleman anticipates quite a few more, closer to 40 pieces to be shown.

The festival was created four or five years ago to branch out away from the traditional parks and rec sports activities in order to show that they could hit all aspects of recreation. The location has changed over the years and the addition of a People’s Choice Award has been added and the winner will receive a gift certificate though, Coleman said, the show is not really a competition but more of a way to recognize kids that are interested in fine art. Certificates signed by West Valley City mayor, Ron Bigelow will also be presented when he comes to observe the student’s work. The event is free to attend and enjoy.

“The program was created solely for the kids so that they can have another outlet and to show their artwork,” said Coleman.

Fairbourne Station Promenade & Plaza is located at 3590 Market St, West Valley City.

West Valley Parks and Recreation have several other events that they are gearing up for this summer including Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 19, where they have partnered with West Valley City Family Fitness Center to host a photo contest for everyone enjoying the city’s parks that day. Kids to Parks was organized by the National Park Trust as part of the National Day of Outdoor Play to get children to go outside and have an adventure in their local parks.
