Chess is a musical with music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, formerly of ABBA, and with lyrics by Tim Rice. The story involves a politically driven, Cold War-era chess tournament between two men—an American grandmaster and a Soviet grandmaster—and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. The musical style is classic and rock dancing upon the stage.
The Midvale Arts Council has decided to perform Chess in “concert” style. The lead characters will perform at the front of the stage with stationary microphones and a full choir behind them as a supporting ensemble. This production will be a Kickstart to our Capital Campaign that will help fund the remodel of the Midvale Outdoor Stage in the Park.
