KraftMaid lays off workers, blames decreased demand on soft housing market

The KraftMaid Cabinetry plant in West Jordan, which serves the western United States, began laying off workers on May 1. Company officials said the layoff was to maintain their competitive market position. With the recent housing downturn, fewer homes are being built and,
consequently, the demand for cabinets has decreased.
“The economic times with the unprecedented downturn of the housing market has forced us into this difficult decision,” said KraftMaid spokeswoman Kathleen Volkes.
