It is not entirely surprising that Salt Lake City is rated the top city in America in which to start a career, according to recently released rankings by WalletHub.com. Utah’s capital is increasingly finding its way high onto lists that focus on jobs, careers and places to live.

But West Valley City? Yes, the state’s second most populous city has jumped into the top one-third of cities on the personal finance website’s rankings of best places to launch a career, placing 49th among 182 cities.

WalletHub stacked the cities based on “29 key metrics that range from the availability of entry-level jobs to monthly average starting salary to workforce diversity,” annual job growth rate, and unemployment rate, according to its website.

Cities received a score for each category, with 100 points representing the most favorable conditions for job market entrants. A number of sources were used to compile the metrics, including data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Council for Community and Economic Research and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

West Valley City compiled an average score of 53.53 when all the metrics were tallied. It ranked first for fasted job growth, a category that adjusted for population growth.

The city ranked 73rd in Quality of Life, another category that was used to compute the overall average score. Salt Lake City was second.

Immediately before and after West Valley City on the WalletHub list are Bismarck, North Dakota (48) and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (50).
