City Journals Game of the Week Preview: Corner Canyon vs. Copper Hills

Nov 26, 2018 04:04PM ● By Justin Adams
This year, the City Journals will choose one boys basketball matchup to cover as our Game of the Week.

This week's City Journals Game of the Week features two of the state's top ranked teams (by Deseret News' preseason rankings). Corner Canyon is the second-ranked 5A team, while Copper Hills is the fifth-ranked 6A team.

Both teams made it far into the state tournament last year, with the Chargers falling to Olympus in the state championship and the Grizzlies falling in the semifinals to Pleasant Grove.

The similarities between the two teams continue. Both teams return their top scorers from last year. For Corner Canyon, Gabe Toombs returns for his senior year after averaging 14.3 points per game as a junior. The Chargers will also return their second-leading scorer, Hayden Welling, who scored 10.9 points per game.

As for Copper Hills, the Grizzlies have the benefit of returning 6'7" senior center Trevon Allfrey, who was named to the Deseret News' 6A All-State Boys Basketball team last year after averaging 18.8 points during his junior year.

However, Copper Hills had a lot of production graduate in its senior class, including guard Jake Jensen who led the team in assists with 2.9 per game. One player to watch will be junior point guard Kylan Shorts, who will try to help take over those ball-distribution duties. He's already shown the ability, as he averaged 1.3 assists per game as a sophomore.

The game will also be a rematch, as the teams met on December 9 last season. Copper Hills emerged with a 9-point victory at home, so the Chargers will be looking to take revenge and protect their own home court this Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
