UDOT to Open Five Lanes in Each Direction on I-15 at Point of the Mountain in Time for Thanksgiving Travel

Nov 24, 2015 08:30AM ● Published by Bryan Scott

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is scheduled to open an additional lane on I-15 near the Point of the Mountain as early as Wednesday morning, Nov. 25. Five lanes in each direction will be open on I-15 between Bangerter Highway and State Route 92 through Sunday, Nov. 29, to accommodate heavy holiday traffic.

UDOT recommends that drivers plan their Thanksgiving travel to avoid the periods of heaviest traffic, if possible. On Wednesday, heavier traffic is expected to begin as early as 10 a.m. and build steadily through the evening. Return traffic on Sunday is expected to be heaviest in the afternoon and evening, especially around 4 p.m.

With winter weather also expected during the holiday weekend, UDOT advises drivers to remember the following safety tips.

  • Allow more space between cars with wet or snowy pavement or reduced visibility.
  • Give snowplows room to work - stay back at least 200 feet, and never try to pass a plow.
  • Reduce speed when driving in winter weather conditions.
  • Keep an emergency kit on hand with items such as a first aid kit, flashlight, blankets, water, and food.

Following the holiday weekend, I-15 near the Point of the Mountain will again be reduced to four lanes in each direction during non-commute times to allow crews to continue construction activities in the middle of the freeway. Five lanes will be open during the morning and evening commutes through winter to keep traffic moving during the busiest times of the day. The area is still an active workzone, and speed limits are reduced to 55 mph.

Crews are widening I-15 to six lanes in each direction between S.R. 92 and 12300 South. Beginning next spring, the majority of the I-15 freeway expansion work will shift between Bangerter Highway and 12300 South. In addition, work will continue as crews complete work on I-15 between Bangerter Highway and S.R. 92. Project completion is scheduled for fall 2016.

Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change. For more information about these and other UDOT projects, visit udottraffic.utah.gov or download the UDOT Traffic app, available for iOS or Android devices.
