Sandy - More than 250 Indian Hills Middle School sixth- through eighth-grade students and first-year principal Doug Graham took to the street in 93-degree record heat on Sept. 25 for the school’s annual 5K fun run. Former principal Floyd Stensrud, who ran with the kids “for most of the years to motivate them on and have fun with them,” said that physical education teacher Ron Halbert began the 5K run. “We tie it into Spirit Week and make it a fun event for the students, with parents and community support,” Halbert said. “The police escort the top runners to the finish line with sirens, and there were snow cones for everyone after the run. We keep a record board so we can see who the fastest 5K runners are.” Halbert said that the 10th annual run, which originated as a smaller 1-mile race by former teacher Pam Brimhall, also had a challenge for students: if they beat their principal, a former Utah Ute defensive end, then he’d have ice cream for them. Fifty students won that challenge, Halbert said.
