The Unified Fire Authority hosted an open house at Station #110, located at 1790 East Fort Union Boulevard, on Oct. 24.

Residents were able to enjoy many activities at the event. Firefighters provided education on keeping homes safe as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The Heavy Rescue Crew gave a demonstration on vehicle extrication. Residents enjoyed free food while receiving an opportunity to learn about the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) program, which is set up to help keep communities safe in an emergency. Firefighters gave fire and rescue demonstrations in addition to station tours. Caption Cutter, the Unified Fire Authority mascot, showed up to entertain the smaller residents of Cottonwood Heights.

The open house was held in honor of Fire Prevention Month which begins the first of October, every year. Fire Prevention Month, specifically the first week of October, commemorates the Great Chicago Fire that killed around 300 people and caused $200 million in damage. The fire burned from Oct. 8 to Oct. 10, 1871.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department is focused on smoke alarms this year for Fire Prevention Month. They  encourage residents to check smoke alarms once a month.
